My Firm

David Terner graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1999, took and passed the Bar Exam on his first test, and was admitted to practice by the Colorado Supreme Court in October 1999. Prior to that time, David had graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy. He grew up in Green Bay, WI then moved to Scarsdale, NY, went to Rye Country Day School in Rye, NY and then to the Anglo American School of New York in Manhattan.

His father Fred S. Terner died when David was 15 years old, and his mother was not a financial maven, so he only did undergrad and law school in his 30's, and knows more than most lawyers what real life is all about. Not having spent years in ivory towers helps inform David about the difficulties you may confront in life, and allows him insight into your possible resolution sets.

David lived overseas for over 10 years, then returned to the States, looked for and found a pre-business, pre-law private college (CMC) and then, as he was interested in Environmental Law, studied law in Boulder, Colorado. As he was an "adult student" he knows the value of education and also has personal experience with student loans. So he knows how the bills pile up.

Originally working for a tech firm (that sent him to Hyderabad, India) after law school, David hung out his shingle after that firm went south. His friends at that firm became his first clients, and he worked with start-ups and sadly, also worked on a number of divorces. That laid the groundwork for his present focus. Some of the tech people had to declare bankruptcy and David helped them through that process. Others got divorced, or had post-decree divorce work (child support/custody and maintenance) that needed to get done. Many created start-ups and David worked with them to create, grow and nurture their business entities. David has also helped hundreds of Coloradoans file for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. Lately David spent 3.5 years in Singapore and he has just returned to Colorado to help American clients. In Singapore, David joined his "beshert", a lovely scuba diver from Malaysia whom he had met while diving in Thailand, and who is working in Singapore. They married in 2008 and are the extremely happy and proud parents of a gorgeous little baby girl.

David prides himself on offering affordable legal services, and does not believe that legal representation should only be for the rich. Therefore, he offers not only a Payment Plan, but extremely competitive and reasonable flat fee agreements for services in Bankruptcy. His hourly fee for family, business (civil) and estate work is kept below the industry average for attorneys of his experience, so that people without great means can avail themselves of the protection of legal counsel. Documents like Wills, Demand Letters and the like are offered at Flat Fee rates.

Terner Legal Counsel is in the Park West building at 10200 W. 44th Ave., Suite 433. There are stairs and an elevator for access.

October 2012 update: David has been admitted to the New York State Bar, and now can practice law in both Colorado and New York.
